Nixon grew up in a very poor home in OC. His father was a weak man and mother very strong. He was always an outsider. You might say he was a "nerd". He enrolled in the Quaker college, Whittier. He continued to be an outsider in college and formed his own frat for his follow outsiders. He was excellent student. After college he entered law school at the prestigious Duke School of Law graduating near the top of his class. Many of his contemporaries obtained positions with top law firms, Nixon had no offers and returned to Whittier.

I think the best word used to describe him as a person would be ambitious. Sometimes ambition can get the better of someone.
Also, Nixon served as an officer in the Navy and was asked to run for Congress by hometown businessmen after he was honorably discharged.

Just think, as a young man in the army, Nixon was allowed to "resign in lieu of Courts-Martial" and thus he was not prosecuted for profiteering and black-market activities.
Looks like he did not change much, eh?!
