The Third Reich is the former nazi party of Germany 1933-1945. Reich in German means something like Kingdom. And they considered their party/government of to be the 3rd rulers of Germany.

Reich means empire.

The third Empire - Hitler's German Empire

On this reckoning, the first Empire was the Holy Roman Empire - of Charlemagne and Barbarossa

The second Empire was from approx 1870 to the end of the first world war. The emperors were William I and II and Frederick II
