1997 jefferson...it looks like the press hit the left side of the face of the coin, half of the "In", from "In god we trust" is not there, the top of "in". on the otherside all of "liberty" seems to have caught the press as well, i can only make out 3 quarters of the "Y" in liberty the rest of the word is gone. On the backside, only the bottom half of"e pluribus" is visable, on the lower right side of the coin just a faint part of the top of the word "america" is visable. this coin does not have any grinding marks or anything. coin looks smooth on the sides. I'm positive this coin was pressed wrong by the coin making machine. what would something like this go for?...I know it's not a fortune but i'm curious.

Sounds like grease got on both dies. When the the coin was struck, the grease stopped the letters from being put on the coin. Also it may have been part of a rag that caused the missing letters. It is not uncommon to see this. I have seen a lot of late date coins this way. The presses are really set these days to produce a lot of coins an hour. Remember one die is stationary and the other one moves. I guess the new presses also strike coins horizontally and not like in the old days vertically. With high speed machines there are more errors, so that makes a lot of them common. You could see a couple of coin dealers and get their opinion. Make sure that they deal in error coins and know the minting process. Hope I helped some for I am not an error collector.
