i just found out that i am pregnant and i have history of blood clotting in the pregnancy that killed my unborn baby girl.
so my OB told me to start taking 81mg aspirin everyday until i have the baby!
now how safe is that i grow up hearing that it is not good to take aspirin while you are pregnant , can anyone please tell me is it safe?

Listen to your doctor. If your doctor told you to take it while pregnant he has good reason too. In most medications, it is recommended not to take them unless directed by your doctor. If you have any concerns talk to your doctor about them. Aspirin thins your blood and there may be more concerns if you did not take them. Remember more blood volume increases in pregnancy. Because aspirin thins your blood out, your blood clots could be prevented so you do not have as much of a risk. I hope this helps explain some and if you ask your doctor or doctors office they should explain why. Also, it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion, but do not be surprised if they tell you the same thing because of your blood clotting history. I would ask your doctor why he wanted you to take aspirin. If you do not feel confident then a second opinion is always good, but it sounds as if your doctor has more concern with the blood clotting due to the miscarriage. Sometimes a doctor has to weigh the risk carefully and determine what would be safer, in your case it sounds like the benefits of aspirin outweigh the risk. Though it is a different situation, my dr. made me start taking hypothyroid medication. Though (through research) I have found that this medication is low risk, it did not reduce the concerns until I was sure. If I did not take these meds, I pose a risk for late miscarriage or still born. Your concern is well intended and you have every right to be concerned. Your ob, if a good one, will weigh his/her options carefully.
18 weeks pregnant.

Actually Aspirin can cause Reye's syndrome (Don't know if that is spelled right) in babies and children under the age of 19 years, that's why the baby aspirin is behind the pharmacy. Baby Aspirin is 80mg, that is why the over the counter pill is 81mg. Honestly I don't think you should stop the pill but I wouldn't take it every day. I'd take it every other day. However, I am not a doctor!!!!!

If it weren't safe, a doctor wouldn't have told you to do it. There are proven benefits to take aspirin FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT.
It just thins out the blood so that the risk of clotting is drastically reduced...In your case, it would be more unsafe to not take it.
Relax...it's okay when it has been prescribed. It's just that some people may not limit themselves to the safe levels and self medicate.

For the general population, Aspirin is a definite N0-No when pregnant. But you have a medical condition that needs to be treated, so your OB/GYN probably knows what he's talking about. But it never hurts to get a second opinion from another Dr. and since you have complications it might be good to find an OB/GYN who specializes in risky pregnancies. Good Luck.

I was always told not to take aspirin while pregnant and my ob said not to but i could take Tylenol so if the ob thinks it is OK i guess it would be fine then. but i think i would get a second opinion before i did so. good luck

my doctor told me no aspirin. BUT if your doctor is telling you to take aspirin... maybe you should get a second opinion. I have heard it is not safe... I'm sure there must be something that is more safe than aspirin.
Good Luck! Don't believe everything that you hear... I would def get a second opinion on that.. sounds a little fishy to me... but who knows?

medicine has made alot of strides and discoveries. 81mg of aspirin is not much. bayer makes one, and st. joseph's (makers of children's aspirin) makes one for adults, both 81mg dosage.
if you're still uncertain, talk with your doctor or seek a 2nd medical opinion or more until you're satisfied and comfortable. this isn't the place to get med advice.

You really need to speak to your OB about this. I am sorry about the loss of your baby girl and I am praying that you will have a healthy baby. Good luck.

the concern with asprin is in the last three months...... its on Bayers website......... 81mg is a low dose of asprin........ and its likely to help prevent your blood from clotting in pregnacny again.......
but maybe express your concern with your doctor...... and see if there is something else you can do all along or something else you can do the last three months
