Among the American people? It strikes me that Democrats view themselves as more sophisticated, and Republicans as more realistic.

Sorry, to clarify: I suppose I'm trying to draw a social comparison between the Democrat/Republican contingents and the British upper/lower classes. I get a very strong impression that Democrats regard themselves as intellectual superiors, and the dialogue on these forums reminds me of the traditional notion of the class divide in the UK.

Incidentally, i'm not making a sociopolitical comment. i'm asking if my observations reflect the truth.

It started as the republicans being the sophisticated and the democrats as the middle to lower class but ever since the economic collapse, it has switched relating to the values of how well fare should be distributed (ie. republicans- charity and family, democrats- government check). It can be seen today that most republicans are the working man trying to save their money by opposing taxes which the democrats push so they can run their multiple programs for assisting people. Realistically there are members of both classes that are on two sides of the political spectrometer. It's how they are brought up etc. I personally see most wealthy people as democrats because all they have to do is a tax write off and they save money.

Sorry - you are incorrect.
Just as I would be if I started making sociopolitical commentaries on GB.
Like Brits are imperialistic hypocrites when they attack American politics when they still haven't gotten out of (N) Ireland & that it was a total land grab when the crown started shipping supporters to Ireland & confiscating land there centuries ago just to have a population loyal to the "royal family".
I would be over simplifying things & wrong when I made that comment.

EDIT: OK if you are not making commentary I would still say your observation is still incorrect. There are snots in both parties that think they are "more sophisticated" and there are both unrealistic & realistic Republicans. And you can't make this a class issue. I know many diehard Republicans that are "economically challenged" but still hope to improve themselves & there are many rich Democrats. It just can't be simplified into a "have and have nots" question.

There has always been a class divide, that is an essential part of the draw for each party. My observations, people view the democrats as being more, for the people. Republicans are viewed by many as the party of intolerance and wealth. Let's face it, one party is about mind your own business and the other party is about legislating morals, doing away with choice and pro big business. Let me add my personal opinion, republicans are not more realistic, the leadership are thieves and the base is wearing blinders to that fact. Not realistic at all.

You're oversimplifying things. I love modern art, I collect antiques including cermics, I read, I love David Lynch movies, and I'm not religious. I'm registered Libertarian but I vote Republican 90% of the time.

As for "class" it depends on what you mean by class. Every shred of data on the subject shows pretty clearly that the vast majority of us aren't anchored in the income groups in which we'd presently be categorized. If you're in the bottom 20% today you're more likely to make it to the top 20% in a decade than to still be in the bottom 20%. Odds are 17 out of 20 you'll be in a higher "quintile" and 2/3 that you'll be in the top 60%. At any given moment there's a lot of people just starting out and they make a lot less than people 20 or 30 years into their careers but that's how much most of them will make 20 or 30 years from now. Are there differences? Sure, of course, not that they're necessarily "unfair" - I don't make the same salary that my next door neighbor makes. But the difference between what I make and what he makes is much smaller than the difference between what either of us makes and what either of us made in our first jobs.

Who voted thumbs down on this? Do you not like Chinese ceramics or do you not like BLS data?

You're right about Republicans being more realistic ...
Democrats or liberals are so far out of touch with reality, i think the majority of them are trapped in a drug induced stupor.

The Democrats tend to see ourselves in an independent society strived for the common good. The Republicans see themselves as stewards of society for their own benefit.

It's not a class divide just a philosophy. A republican sees oneself as a liberal who has been mugged. The world seems easy and rosy until someone knocks some reality into them.
