First , I'm sorry to hear about your situation.
You can always change your job, but without knowing the whole story. Take a two pronged approach and this is very time consuming and rewarding.
1) Start looking for a new job...aggressively. Waste no time at all.
2) Read up on abuse in the work place online...do a yahoo/google search and start learning how you need to document things ..as if you were representing yourself in a court of law. Make your case solid and robust. Collect documents, get witnesses, any and all things that prove your case. And more importantly...make sure its all simple clear and presentable to a judge that just might award you punitive damages.
Don't change your behavior, don't threaten your boss either. Keep it cool and build your case. The best thing you have going and hopefully will keep going is your boss.
At some point you'll need to put your stake in the ground...anyone in HR and in the legal system..will see that you mean business...and this will bode well for you.
3) Stay as far away from your boss as possible. And make the changes. These lessons are here for you to learn from and not to repeat.

The best way is to simply /look/ for a new job. Don't quit you're current job until you have a new, steady job at hand. As for the verbal insults and intimidation, just try to ignore it. If you can't, try not to let it show. Work hard and diligently, and make sure there is NOTHING that can give your boss an excuse to fire you. If all else fails, go to the top notch. Or, someone higher than your boss.

keep a work diary.
If you have to go thru this EVERY DAY or even twice a week, this would make you a very rich woman.
After you have documented 6 seperate incidences of this, GO TO AN ATTORNY, just pick one out of the phone book (The smaller the add the better). This will be one of his dream cases.
HE will advise you if you should quit (hostile work enviornment) or if he will just sue while you are still working there (thus having that manager at least reassigned).
If you dont like the first lawyers assessment, consult with a second one.

Call the Department of Labor and report it. Tell them that you are concerned about loosing your job and they will send someone to investigate. See if anyone else at work is being treated likewise and ask how he feels. When the Department of Labor comes it will interview more than one employee. Looking for another job is always an option, so do it, be patient, and aim to succeed.

I'm in a similar situation and it just plain sucks. But, I stand up for myself diplomatically and realize that right now there aren't many job openings in my field. I just remind myself that abusive people are really insecure and small minded and I am better than that. Just do your work, get the resumes flowing and hang in there!

if you ask me i am 15 years old but anyway i would talk to the police or go to court with the manager you should not take any verbal abuse or physical abuse at all if you go to court and win the trial you could get thousand of dollars for harrasment against him try that and tel me how it works out for you.

hey!!! look i would literally stand up for my self. idc how dam big he is or small, i would stand up for my moral and values. and if he threatens to you, have a possible witness around hearing evrything or recording everything secretly, then send it to the cops, alot of people go thru this bullshit its time to take a stand, the most trustworthy person you know, and ask them to help you ok!!
