I am trying to upgrade my hard drive but I am getting mixed signals about which brand to purchase. I'm leaning towards Seagate but not sure...also, because OEM drive prices are more attractive, should I purchase it if I am not too familar with computers? What do you recommend?

Whatever it is, make sure to have a warrenty on it. Most hard drives have a 5 years warrenty. You'll need it if the driver crashes.

OEM drives are fine provided you just want to put in the computer you have now. The mountings are already in place and you already have the cables so you don't need anything else. Now, retail drives will typically come with a data migration toolkit provided you want to move your Windows installation, programs and data over to the new drive then you may want to consider the retail version as it will come with those tools and a step by step guide on how to do it. If you already have a backup or drive imaging tool (Nero will do the job) then you don't need those tools.

So consider that and then make your decision. As far as brand, Western Digital, Western Digital or Western Digital. I've had a Maxtor and Seagate drives fail on me in a span of two weeks, and they were brand new. I had a two year old beat up Western Digital drive that I didn't expect to work and guess what... it did and whats more, the data was still intact and readable (not that I wanted) but it more than proved to me that Western Digital is 10,000 times more reliable than the "other" guys.

I even had Western Digital replace one of the drives that failed out of warranty, at least in my case, they stand behind their product.

Seagate and Maxtor, beh, might be cheaper but you get what you pay for.

Maxtor, Western Digital and Seagate are all good drives. I've had mixed to poor results with the Samsung drives.

I do a lot of this since I own a small computer business.

I've used most types of hard disks that there are out there, I've had good and bad in all, its the luck of the draw , I do like seagate though. hard drives are supposed to be good for X# of years and they test this by getting a bank of 1000 drives and running them all at once and then they see how long it takes for X # to fail, they say this gives an accurate indication of how long they'll last, I say poppycock, but anyway, most drives are pretty good

I prefer Seagate or Western Digital.

I've een computing for "YEARS" and the ONLY hard drives that have died on me were MAXTOR. True they replace them with no problems, but that doesn't get your data back or the time it takes for it to get to you.

As for OEM drives, they're just as good as "regular" drives, EXCEPT they usally only have a ONE YEAR (even shorter) Warranty unlike the 'regular' drives.

I recently bought a OEM hard drive, I feared I didn't have the components that I needed to hook it up on. I was wrong, you computer should already be able to connect a second hard drive. Best deals? Goto NEWEGG.com, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148215

That is a great offer. If you need help connecting it, just ask! Its extremely simple. Good luck!
