Republicans are typically more interested in preserving what's good in society, while democrats are more interested in creating more good (through improvement).
Really, they can both be great when they're working right. When they aren't........well.......things aren't so peachy.

I think all the junk breaks down to the difference between the fundamental principles of the party ideologies.
The Republicans are more concerned with civil liberties, and the Democrats are more concerned with civil rights.
The distinction is that:
Civil Liberties are freedoms that keep the government from telling you what to do, which are granted you you by the constitution. Promoting the idea of freedom to do what you want. For example, you can make all the money you want and not have to give it to anyone...it's your choice to do so or not.
Civil Rights are statutes put in place to promote equality. For example, although you own a restuarant (private property), since it's a service you can't limit your patrons to a specific race or gender.
The difference between Reps and Dems is a perfect example of the tension that exists between freedom and equality, which are both founding principles of our government.
Whether or not the politicians actually stay true to the ideology of each party is another thing, but thats all politics, in the end whenever there are results are in, they usually end up being about enhancing freedom or enhancing equality.

They both know the problems our country has.Democrats think that the government can fix them all.Republicans Know that most governments programs make the problems worse.Republicans Know that the best answers to most of Americas problems come from the private sector.
Queen ofya , Just because you are a Republican with a low IQ does not mean that is the measurement of other Republicans.

AS a non-American perhaps I am not as tainted by the attack adds each throw at each other.
Basically both parties want the best for America.
The Republican Party believe the best way to achieve this is through less government intervention, taxation, trade barriers and regulation. The Democrats believe more intervention, trade barriers, taxation and regulation is required.
Both arguments have merits. And within each party there are dissenting opinions and people who would put practicality ahead of principle.

The really immature Republicans resort to name-calling when they don't have a good argument. The mature Democrats do the same thing.

The philosophy of Democrats is bigger government, which includes higher taxes to enable the government to get bigger and controll everyone's lives. The philosophy of Republicans is smaller government, and idividualism, not group-think. It should be, anyway.

I think that Democrats belive that our country's people should have more say in laws that are created, and that Republicans are only doing it for the money.

Ideally, Rep. will be for smaller government, capitalism and free market. Socially, they might or might not be conservative [e.g for or against abortion, etc.]
Ideally, Dems. are liberal socially, perhaps economically if they are not protectionist. They are for bigger government that provides essentials things to all people, thus more taxes for the rich, and wealth distributions... Socially, they are for less government involvement in private life..
But, realistically they are indifferent. Rep are what Democrats want to be, and vice versa

Republicans teach you 'how' to work for what you need.
They give you a 'hand up' in life which 'helps you succeed on your own'.
Democrats teach you to 'take' what you need.
They give you a 'hand out' in life which 'keeps you down and dependent on them'.
