It depends on your definition of "greatest":

Are you talking powerful? Galactus
Are you talking evil? Mephisto
Are you talking sales? Spidey or Wolverine/X-Men
Are you talking favorites?
I think from my Marvel experience it would be the Gray Hulk.

The greatest Marvel character has to be Spiderman. He is an everyman who struggles with life like the rest of us but has to bear the extra responsibility of the powers he has. He transferred well to the movies to bring in a wider audience and he got to marry a hot red head so how lucky is that :)
I also like Iron Fist and Wolverine a lot but they are not the best overall.

THE GREATEST MARVEL CHARACTER?

Well, that could go one of any directions - it depends on if you mean hero or villain. If you mean hero, I'd have to say probably an old and long forgotten classic....

The Molecule Man

Who started out as a villain, and ended as a hero during the Secret Wars. He not only saved the planet and everyone on it, but the whole universe as well.

But if you mean villains, then I'd probably have to go with Doctor Doom or Thanatos - they've gone after total universal power control more than most villains in history. And remember comic fans, there's only one True Father of the Marvel Universe - the one, the only......

Stan "The Man" Lee

EXCELSIOR, TRUE BELIEVERS!!

Have to agree with the Rev on the villains (Although Thanatos was a rich human scheming for power on the animated series "Gargoyles"; I think he meant Thanos of Titan.)

As far as characters, I give a nod to Galactus, the devourer of Worlds. He is a force of nature given form and sentience. He is neithr good nor evil but when he has his eye on your planet, you bet you have problems. Galactus has been a key element in many of the stories where ultimate power is sought. While not omnipotent, power beyond knowing.
