you've already read the answers about the train (takes 24 hours), Ryanair (www.ryanair.com: from Milano to Eindhoven, then Eindhoven to AMS 90 minutes by train, every half hour, visit www.ns.nl = dutch railway organisation. They have english site.

Third, cheapest and probably safest method, and surely one of the nicest ones where you really get to know the locals, is hitchhiking using an organisation as www.hitchiking.org. People you travel with are enlisted. It is known with whom you travel, so it is safe. People who offer to take a hitch hiker do this because they want to talk and meet new people. I've done it about two dozen times during the last ten years, just to go to the other side of Europe. And it is cheap: from free to 25 euro for a ride.

Rail travel is a great way to see Europe, but the distance from Florence to Amsterdam lends itself to a quick flight. Airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet offer really cheap flights. The cheapest flights are normally early in the morning and the earlier you can book the better. I took a flight from London to Amsterdam once for $25. Also, Florence doesn't have a major airport so you would have to take a train to Milan which is about 2 and a half hours away. The trains are a beautiful way to travel, but the flight will be quicker and likely more cost effective.

Get a Europass. This is a train pass that will allow you to travel anywhere within Europe cheaply. Air travel seems quite cheap until you add up all the charges. Example I wanted to fly Milan-Paris. Ticket was $135 round trip so I thought no big deal. Got to the final page and my ticket became $525 after all the crazy airport, customs etc taxes they tack on. Besides, with a Europass you can stop in other places and see unforgettable landscapes on the way.
