start in a spare room, get all your stuff out of that room and then start piling his stuff in that room. If you feel overwhelmed, take a break. Moving and breaking up both suck. Sorry you are going through it.

Just take one step at a time. Get plenty of boxes, if you're the only one moving, just box your stuff and let him take care of his stuff. If you're on speaking terms, you two can work out more of the details but if you're not then you could be in for some problems. If he has so much that you can't find your things, and you 're both moving, you could help yourself by boxing some of his things...just so that you can find your things.
For many reasons, be as honest and ethical as you can be during the process, you have to live with yourself. Try not to be spitefull. I think what goes around comes around and since you're separating, you may someday reconcile. 5 - 10 years from now you'll wonder why you wanted some of the things you'll take, so make a pot of tea, put on some music, pick a room and start.

Get your most valuable things out first. Then work at the rest until you get sick of it. Let him deal with the rest. If he won't help rent a dumpster and throw everything out. Pack rat behavior is a sign of more serious problems. You are doing the right thing.

it's particularly difficult during a breakup to pack objectively, but i would suggest getting a friend to help you go one room at a time. don't worry about if his stuff is organized, just put it in unsealed boxes and stack them out of your way. be meticulous because the WORST thing is calling and saying "hey, i forgot my ___." doing it alone is tough- get a friend and take your time :)
DON'T throw anything of his away- you don't want to give him any excuse to call you ever again!

Set his things aside and box up yours. Start right where you are and do one small area. After one section is complete you will feel better.

Torch it all!!!
Sorry - I lived with someone like that too. Dig through his crap and heap it all in a big pile - his stuff is not your issue. But make sure you find the important stuff you need.

Start putting his stuff into a dumpster or garbage can. He will then come to 'rescue' it and take it out of the way of the things you need to pack.

If it's so hard to pack up everything, maybe you should just try to reconcile. Talk to him and try to work it out, so you don't have to separate. Good luck to you both.
