Human systems must inevitably be flawed, yet democracy has been painted lily-white by the media, politicians and think-tanks. This essay is an eye-opener: http://southerncrossreview.org/50/sayeed.htm
THE DARK SIDE OF DEMOCRACY is not the author's views or rants: he/she quotes experts, goes back to Greek democracy, Plato and Thucydides, and comes back to modern times. For instance, I did not know that the European Union had been formed to prevent furture wars in Europe - among western democracies (Prussia and Germany were both democracies when they attacked other democracies). Please read, and let me know what you think : and read with an open mind.

You are seeing the dark side of democracy today in America. Corporations and Special Interest Groups have politicians in their pockets because of campaign contributions. They pull in favors as needed and promise to fund the re-election campaign. The people of this particular democracy have turned their heads and do not want to deal with the reality of the situation or feel helpless in dealing with it. I encourage you to read the constitution and see how often the government violates the principles laid within the document.

Of course Democracy has a dark side. But america is not a democracy, it's a republic. There is a reason that we are attempting to place a Parlimentary system into Iraq and not the system we have in america: the executive branch is too powerful in our system.
that being said, I agree with the answers above. the dark side is Darth Cheney

We don't have a democracy and we do not have it for a very good reason: It keeps the majority from getting out of hand with the minority! We have a Representative Republic!
I don't have a clue how a true democracy would ever work. You would spend 1/2 your life voting and end up in the mess California found themselves in with some of their propositions!
We have used the CIA in many countries to destabilize and overthrow governments, many who were elected. The CIA often uses terrorist attacks, like they did in Iran when we put the pro US Oil Shaw of Iran in power! Iraq used to be a Representative Republic until we put Saddam Hussein in power!
We know how to pick them!

Democracy most certainly does have a dark side. It can be seen in mob rule. That is why the U.S.A. isn't a democracy, but a constitutional republic.

Based on my own limited experience, I'd have to say that Greed and naivety are the two biggest drawbacks. Greed, in that all corporations ultimated goal is to enslave the middle class and make them poorer, and naivety in that we don't see certain races of people for who they are, they natural behavior and so forth.
