your body has two major excitatory chemicals called adrenalin and noradrenaline (or epinephrine and norepinephrine in the US). These are released when you get a fright or during excitement. They cause blood flow and tension in the muscles. This is because our evolutionary history is basically one of flight (running away) fight and fright from predators and other dangers, though this is far less so these days. Blood flow and tension in muscales enables you to run away or fight and thus save your own life. You can imagine that ancestors who did not possess this ability got killed before they could pass on their genes to offspring whereas people who had this reaction mechanism survived!
