I bought a matte satin dress at second hand store and it is a size 12. I am a size 8 and I was wondering if it is possible to get it fixed so it can fit me. Would it be expensive? Is it not possible? I really like the dress and I am willing to do whatever is possible in order for it to fit me. Are there places you can go to where they don't charge that much, are reliable, and still do a nice job? I don't know how to sew just in case if you were wondering and I am not willing to take the risk to fix it myself. Nor do I want to send it out to someone out of state or out of the country. I would prefer to have it taken locally in the Southern California area. Who are some people I can trust in that area? Thanks!!!

The dress has no sequins, beads, or any type of decoration. It is a plain matte satin dress.

I am glad you found something that you like so much, that does not happen often enough to folks. It would depend on the style if it could be altered to fit you. My sister in law was a machinist for GAP in south america and now lives in California, I think a lot of South American women have expereince of clothes making like that as a lot of the factories are based in the south there. You could ask someone you know from there, sometimes people at work have a mom or a grandmother who is a whizz at sewing..you know madetheir own wedding dress etc. Or what about going to your loca theare company or opera house and asking to see the costume person there and ask her to do it? Again the cost will depend on the style and if it has to be reshaped but it sounds like this is something you will have for a while and will enjoy so think of that too, satin is hard to work with. But now I am thinking of a wedding dress store or a rent a dress type shop, they have people that do alterations. Ask first what she plans to do and how she plans to do it to access if you trust her or not.

Sorry I dont live in CAlifornia but I can tell you personally that at my prom I was between a size 1 & 2 with a dress that was a size 4 and the place that I bought the dress had a seamstress on site that to my dress up to my proportions. So It's possible.
The thing is that every seamstress is different on how and what they charge and how long it will take. Because of the fabric and how much they will have to take it up it might cost more than a simple letting out of the hem or my one size change.
Good Luck!

you can have it taken up but with that much of an alteration, it could cost as much as the dress. Depends on what all needs to be done and if beads/sequins have to be removed to make the alterations and then added back on. I couldn't suggest anyone in your area but you might find it cheaper to be done by a private person. Go to your local fabric store and they sometimes have a list of people in the area who sew. Their specialty is also listed. so look for alterations. This is how I had some clothes made for a Renaissance Festival I was working at years ago. Much cheaper than buying them.

Shop around for a good tailor in your area; prices may vary.
