I am all-Black, but I have mixed relatives. I believe in calling them whatever they want to be called. However, do most people who are 1/2 Black and 1/2 White prefer "biracial" (because it sounds modern) or "mulatto" (because although it sounds old, it is the only word that specifically describes someone who is half Black and Half White)?

It would be politically correct to call someone of more than one race biracial or mixed. The word Mulatto is spanish for mule. Since a mule is half male donkey and a female horse, white people started using the word for slave children born to their male white slave owners and female black slave mothers. Mulatto is an offensive and derogatory word.

mulatto is best because the term describes someone who is half anglo-saxon descent and half African descent........Biracial is insulting because it implies the age old racist theology that Blacks are not human, and therefore a seperate and lower species/race. The woman below me has NO idea what she's talking about!

I prefer bi-racial- mulatto is a deragatory term to me, and I know other biracial people (and I am one) feel the same way.

I would just describe them as half black half white. when you are describing what they look like to people, other than that if your not describing them to someone call them by thier first name. I am a half breed to so lol I would be offended if people kept bringing it up, who i am is deeper than my skin.

how are you planning to use either term ?? you may be black,
