Well..... lawyers usually are people with high intelligence and exceptional spelling, grammar, communication skills, and school grades.
As for whether they lie and what they do.... personally I find them to be very scary people. .

Lawyers represent the legal interests of their clients and they are not supposed to knowingly lie just like anyone else in a legal proceeding. Knowingly lying is considered perjury and there are fines and punishments for those found guilty of perjury.

Lawyers in theory are to uphold the freedoms granted to all citizens by the constitution! In practice, they make sure that the rights of those accused of a crime are not violated.
(assuming you mean a criminal defense lawyer).
They are not knowingly supposed to lie however, as a group, they have been known to 'understate' the truth!

I agree with the first answer and I want to add that they know HOW to state their cases to the benefit of their clients because of their intimate knowledge of the law. Just think about Pres. Clinton;s classic response: "That depends what 'is' is." (I hope I quoted him correctly.)
