Just got a new desktop with XP Prof. Haven't used XP before. Have intended to install Norton's Internet Security products but read a snippet somewhere that XP has it's own firewall. I'm wondering if it's better than Norton's. If yes, should I leave it be and can I then selectively install Norton's virusguard, spyware etc. Would appreciate advice.

XP (SP2) has a firewall and is configured in the control panel. It does the job against inbound attacks if you have a public IP address. Just make sure you do all updates.

For a 2-way firewall, check out zone alarm and comodo.

Personally, I would recommend against getting Norton, as it is a resource hog. Search the net for this and you sill see what I mean. I run windows firewall with a good antivirus and antispy that are all free, top rated, and low on resources. Search some of my previous posts for all the details.

NOW...to answer your question, if you do install norton, it will automatically take over windows firewall. Its a bear to remove (which is another reason I dont like).

I would do the standard install on Norton and a pop-up comes up asking if you want norton or windows to be your firewall - I usually keep windows firewall but it's six of one half a dozen of the other situation - both are pretty much the same. The decision comes down to do you want it kept all neat and tidy contained in Norton or don;t you mind have two systems protecting your pc.

Get Norton Internet Security and install it. It comes with a Firewall.

XP does have its own firewall, but won't be as good as Norton's. When you install Norton, it'll ask you if you want to disable Windows' firewall. Say 'Yes'.

norton installs it's own firefall, which is not recommended, norton is not a very good virus protection at all and i don't know why people keep trusting norton. the best one is trojan so far. but if i were you, i wouldn't uninstall windows firewall.

switch off windows firewall if you have a third party firewall like Norton's - they may conflict
