to add more meaning to the excellent first answer
--------
anno domini means dominant year[s]. dominant is that which we experience. dei, or rei are the roots for 'lord' but it is true that the christian church refers to it as the year of our lord

before christ is sometimes substitued with "BCE" which means "before common era"

ante meridiem means "before the middle" [of the day, which is noon]
post meridiem means "after the middle" [of the day, which is noon]
