Try Dartford, Kent. Only just outside London, but considerably cheaper - and with much better transport links than just about anywhere else south-east of London.

Thurrock. This area is just outside London, to the east and is the site of a huge amount of new house building. You are going to get the most value for your money here. The main settlements to look for are Grays and Chafford Hundred (although Grays has better rail links to London).

try somewhere like Barking/Dagenham/Elm Park plenty of property to rent or buy at reasonable prices they are on the District Line so trains go direct into the city and west end but if driving use the A13 there are quite often traffic jams at peak times but i guess that goes for most areas these days

Do you mean to live, go on vacation or what? If to live, then I think Essex. Places like Chigwell or Barking are good. They are within commuting distance of central London. Property in places like Surrey are, on the whole, more expensive.
