I'm just curious about how people define death. Either religious or scientific... what do you think?

Death has been wrongly interpreted during the infancy of humanity as non existence. There are many things in our modern world that we can not see or touch but in which we believe. Gravity, waves, etc.. are classical examples
All of us had to die before being born into this physical world. So we all, without exception, come from another world totally different from the physical world in which we live now.
This is an irrefutable truth independent of our personal beliefs.
We had to die to the "womb world" in order to be born into the physical world.
Death is a relative word that means change. We go from one dimension of existence into a higher form of existence. Or in a symbolic language from one world to a higher world. At each transition we have to change, or die, in the ordinary language.
People who cease to have a physical existence continue to live but in a higher dimension, unknown to us for a very good reason.
That good reason can be the subject of a whole new question.
This may sound too complex or esoteric but it is simple and an example will clarify it.
When we were in the womb of our mother we were in another world. We were living in a physiological world. It was completely different from this physical world.
When we abandoned the womb world (died to the womb world) and were born into the physical world, we didn't "go" to any other place. We stayed in the same place. We came into a new and higher dimension of existence, the physical world.
Similarly when we abandon the physical world we continue our existence in a more evolved or higher dimension that is not physical but spiritual.
So the next world is not a "place" where we will be going to. It is here. But in another dimension unknown to us, just as the physical world was unknown to the fetus.
Death does not exist even in the physical sense because all the atoms of our body continue to exist in some other form
Now the purpose of the physiological world -the womb world- was to develop eyes, ears, lungs, feet, hands and brains that were of no use in that environment. Their necessity became apparent in the following world, this physical world.
The purpose of the physical world in which we live now, is to develop moral virtues and to put them to the service of mankind. The usefulness of the effort of polishing our character and acquiring moral virtues will become apparent in the other dimensions of life which are not material but spiritual because progress continues in all the worlds and is not limited to this physical world

For human beings, a good definition of death is the irreparable cessation of cognitive function.

We are our brains. Humans are defined by our cognition, memories, personality. After the brain dies, we no longer exist.

Science is pushing back the clock on what we call death. It used to be when the heart stopped. Now doctors can salvage the heart with electricity or even stop it during surgery. Future medical developments will continue to push back the definition of death.

Death is the condition where the life force leave the body, wherein the transformation of the body to the 5 elements set in , in which case the spirit leaves the body and either returns through another body in the next life or unite with God in the other dimention.

When Jesus gave what no one could take on calvary, He died the death everyone that does not choose to live up to the conditions upon which eternal life is offered, In The bible it says in Eccl.9:5 the dead know not anything, real death is what Jesus went through He died the second death which all who reject Jesus must face, my one line bible dictionary tells this about death:DEATH, n. deth.
1. That state of a being, animal or vegetable, but more particularly of an animal, in which there is a total and permanent cessation of all the vital functions, when the organs have not only ceased to act, but have lost the susceptibility of renewed action. Thus the cessation of respiration and circulation in an animal may not be death, for during hybernation some animals become entirely torpid, and some animals and vegetables may be subjected to a fixed state by frost, but being capable of revived activity, they are not dead.
2. The state of the dead; as the gates of death. Job 38.
3. The manner of dying.
Thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas. Ezek. 28.
Let me die the death of the righteous. Numb. 23:10.
4. The image of mortality represented by a skeleton; as a death's head.
5. Murder; as a man of death.
6. Cause of death.
O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. 2 Kings 4:40.
We say, he caught his death.
7. Destroyer or agent of death; as, he will be the death of his poor father.
8. In poetry, the means or instrument of death; as an arrow is called the feathered death; a ball, a leaden death.

Death is the cessation of bodily and mental activity.

Death in religion, depending on the type of religion, could mean anything. Usually, it is the bodily death plus the transfer of the life spirit from the body to somewhere (or none at all).

Death in science is the cessation of all vital bodily functions. Mainly, it is breathing, heart beating, and possibly brain functions - when these things stop, you are pronounced dead.

To me, death could happen if one or more of these happen.

1. Your bodily organs stop functioning. (physical death)
2. Your mind stops thinking. (mental death)
3. You lose all hope and will to live. (spiritual death)

You can be dead physically, mentally, or spiritually.

A person can be alive physically, and yet be dead mentally or spiritually. That is like being an animal, a robot, or being a zombie.

Or, a person can be in near-physical death, like in a coma, where his body is barely functioning (heart beats), but can't move, but his mind is still active, and he may still want to live.

well it cant be simply the absence of life... or...

well gosh good Q.

I can define dead and living and all that but "death" like as-in the act is quite hard. I guess it would be that instant inbetween being alive and being dead. Its something that happens, not a state...
oh crap, I could write a book about it now

i might define dying as not purely the cessation of the actual physique, however the cessation of the soul besides. i think of somebody may well be lifeless and nevertheless be alive bodily. in the event that they have not any purpose, no concrete meaning to their existence, they are lifeless interior. The shutting down of their actual physique will in basic terms be a formality. even however, if one is alive and thriving spiritually, dying will in basic terms be a passing from one existance to the subsequent. not likely dying in any respect.

I think that death means that we cease to exist as a living human being. However, that's the physical part. Metaphysically, our souls continue to exist. You know, that's the spiritual part.

weeeell. according to dumbledore in harry potter book #1 it was the "next adventure"

according to me: its a part of life that is essential. if people lived forever, everything would be boring and mundane. we would probably hear about like a 2391028123098 old woman tyring to kill herself bc of boredom. the body cant live forever even if our soul and heart (not the organ) wants to live forever, the body is going to get tired after a while.
