I've read quite a few interviews with Rob Thomas about this, as the band took quite a bit of heat from the media for a song that, on the surface, seems to be the view of an abusive relationship from a man's perspective.

However, in interviews, Thomas draws attention to the "perceived" topic of the song from the audience; in his (paraphrased) opinion, '...just because a man sings a song, it doesn't mean that the man is the lead character...' (or something like that).

Basically, Thomas is writing about the more subtle forms of abuse that takes place in a relationship: control, jealousy, guilt and pressure. In this case, the abuse referenced in the song (I'm gonna push you down / I'm gonna push you around / I'm gonna take you for granted) is coming from a woman; the male character, in this case, is the abused.

about a girl that is has been hurt and takes it out on someone else but really just needs their reassurance. Sometimes we know exactly what we are doing but seem to have no control over the situation

Lol, I was just listening to Long Day from that album when I saw this...

I think that is means, that his lover thinks that their relationship is dying. Though he, wants to "push" it forward. He doesn't want it to die because he really loves her.
