Internet phones don't work well with satellite because of the lag time created by the data having to travel all the way into outer space and back down to earth.

I use SunRocket and they only require a 120 kbps download/upload speed. They are also cheaper than services like Vonage. I pay $199/year (USD) which works out to be less than $17/month (USD). Service has worked well for me. I've even taken it overseas with me and used it as an inexpensive way to dial back home. Only situation that presented a problem was when I tried to use it on a network where I needed to enter a proxy server (the "Gizmo" didn't have an option to enter that info).

Orphan Annie ... I cannot answer your question directly. HOWEVER, I worry a bit that those speeds may be a bit too slow for good phone service. I hope I'm wrong, but I hope you'll remember to check with the phone service providers you contact to ask what the minimum speed requirements are. Also, since a phone service provider may be trying to entice you to join, don't forget that if your Hughes connection provides just the minimum speed that the phone provider requires, the quality/clarity of the connection may suffer.

Good luck with it.
