Do you guys understand what a hypothetical is? We won't know the answer to this until 10 years from now.

I guess, I shouldn't be surprised. But I am.

Germany was formed from quite different tribes in the 8th century. And in 1945, it basically instantly became a peaceful democracy. So have some sense.

I would eat crow pie if Iraq is a peaceful democracy 100 years from now.

There is no chance of Iraq becoming a peaceful democracy as long as the USA has troops there. We still have troops in Germany and Japan and that war has been over for 60 years.

Even if the USA were to pull out, the religious fanatics will still kill each other over their religion.

No peace there. So how can there be a democracy?

It just won't happen.

Saddam Hussein ruled with an iron fist and that's what it took to keep those people in line.

No chance of anyone eating crow. the bush administration has really mucked up that part of the world and we are going to be suffering because of his greed and stupidity for a long long time.

Eat crow when thousands of innocent people are dead? When there could have been another way?

But if it gives their families a moments peace to believe that their loved ones did not die in vein, then I'd be first in line.

One of the reasons this conversation has become so tiresome is that it's often just a contest about who's right. We sit back in the comfort of our living rooms, making pronouncements about what we'd do if we were in this situation when we have absolutely no idea what it would be like to be in this situation.

And condescension, by the way, will never be a conduit for any type of intelligent discourse on the subject!

There's nothing I wish for more fervently than a peaceful Iraq, but it will NEVER be a peaceful democracy. It may be a peaceful theocracy or dictatorship, but it will never be a united country because it has NEVER been a united country. It doesn't WANT to be a united country. You can't impose democracy on unwilling people! What is so difficult to get about that concept!

Oh man that's a good one, I'm literally crying from laughing so hard. You are so right...Thousands of years of religious turmoil between three ethnic/religious factions done away with in 4 years of American occupation with the guise of a free democracy, you sir may be the BIGGEST douche bag on this site. I go on this site to make fun of idiots like yourself, not to prove my mental merit, please keep asking questions..It shows how stupid you really are.
