I think alot of the time it's about control. If people are struggling with feelings that they feel they cannot control (say, depression, but could be other things) and that they feel are to much. they sometimes turn these feelings into physical symptons, such as cutting yourself, as a way of experiencing a pain you can control, rather than pain you cannot control (feelings and emotions). When you abuse youself, although you are still creating pain, it sometimes seems a 'easier to deal with' pain than the one you are feeling internally. A cut is much easier to fix than a emotional feeling of dispair or something similar.

In other situations it's about letting out the feelings into something more real. There's also cases where the person is trying to get attention, not in a bad attention-seeking way, but in a way that they because others cannot see their internal pain, they don't realise how much pain the person is in. By harming themselves, they are creating a 'pain' someone else can see, and is more likely to help you with.

There are many reasons though, none are set in stone. Depends on the person.

well somebodys gotta do it!,,besides i like to call it, hitting the old self-destruct button...when your on a roll sometimes u just keep hitting that red button, causing disaster after disaster, as if life wasnt hard enough your own thoughtlessnes really raises havoc..the easy answer someone will say is cuz we feel guilty about something or punishing deeds we have done, i dont buy that...i think its more evil than just punishing ourselves...or maybe its a self motivating way to keep yourself humble~
