Well,
Yes, the battery will explode when heated up enough. The reason it would explode is because the acid liquid in the inside of the battery that is used to hold a charge expands more that the harder shell of the battery. As a result, the liquid in the inside pushes even harder on the shell of the battery casing, once enough pressure builds up, the battery explodes with hot acid. Hot acid eats faster than cold or room temperature acid. When things get hotter, they expand and react more readily than things that are cold. Its like wtaer when frozen, you can stand on it because the water molecules are so close together. In a nutshell, the battery will explode because of the increase of pressure in the inside of the battery. Hope this helps.

They can but most dont without someone trying to do so.....
There are warning labels on the side of most batteries that inceneration (putting them in a fire in case my spelling is so bad that you cant even guess that word that I was trying to write)
Not only is it dangerous to heat the battery, but the acid that would get on you if the battery did explode is caustic. You could get a very nasty chemical burn from it.

it really depends on the batteries. Lithium batteries (used in cell phones, laptops, etc.) are highly flammable. thats why many computer companies have been recalling them. Car batteries on the other hand tend to melt rather than explode.
