My 2004 Toyota Highlander makes a thump I feel slightly in the steering wheel when it is turned almost all the way in either direction.

If it is a 4x4 then it is probably the universal joint that is used as a sorta 'steering knuckle' in the front ends' drive-line at the wheel's pivot point relative to the axle-line.

They do not work as well as constant velocity joints as they tend to bind slightly as they go round makes it jump a little, even more on dry pavement, when in four wheel drive, cornering tightly.
