If it's Tolkien himself, nothing beats Wikipedia online, but I'd suggest checking your local library for a biography, especially J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography by Humphery Carpenter (edited by Tolkien himself).

If it's Middle Earth and its inhabitants you're looking for, the absolute best source that exists in this galaxy is (delete the ... at the end - Yahoo likes to put that in by itself). It's got EVERYTHING.
