All wheel drive is your best bet, I personally have had a back wheel drive car which was pretty hard to get good traction because the wheels would come around the side I would think that front wheel drive is safer for slippery roads

It used to be that all cars were rear-wheel drive. The primary purpose for changing most all over to front-drive was to place the weight of the engine over the drive wheels. The old Volkswagens proved to US car-makers that such a configuration was more dependable on a slippery surface and adapted to that idea.
For better traction, most (not all) front-wheel drive cars are best. Some cars are just "dogs" no matter what and do not get around well when on slick roads because of their weight distribution. Stay away from cars that have most of their weight on the front end...they are harder to turn when it's slippery even though the weight is there. Some of those cars are sporty-looking but are no good unless you are south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Front wheel drives are going to be easier to control on a slippery road. All of the weight from the motor is located over the drive axle and you will feel the difference.
In a rear-wheel drive vehicle there is barely any weight over the drive axle which can cause wheel spin, thus losing traction.

front-wheel unless you put extra weight in the trunk on a rear wheel. The original Volkswagen Beetle had great traction, and it was rear wheel drive. Surprise! Of course the engine was located over the drive axle as in a modern front wheel drive car.

I *heard* that rear wheel drive is better in ice and slippery roads because sometimes the back end can slip out from behind with front wheel drive and you can loose control.
Since I really haven't come across slippery roads I dont know, this is just what I read somewhere before but it does seem to make sense.

Most people would agree that front wheel drive is the way to go, because your drive tires are also the ones steering the car. It's like if you put a long piece of wood in water and try pushing it from the back and then try pulling it from the front, the long goes straighter when is is being pulled. When pushed from the rear the front of the log wants to move from side to side instead of going straight.

the laws of physics show that it requires less energy to push as opposed to pulling. ever wonder why indy and nascar are all rear wheel drive ? all your true high performance autos ? trucks ? i wouldn't own a front wheel drive except for the two i had acquired for free. they sucked in the upstate n.y. snow. i've driven for for 37 yrs. tractor trailer since 1974. let me tell you 4wd yahoos, traction to go only gets you up side down in the median for the most part. when its that slippery that you need awd, its time to park it. i'll stick with my rear wheel drive, cheaper and easier to repair.

For straight forwards acceleration, front wheel drive, but for "pushing" the car around a corner, rear is better.
Front wheel drive tends to skid-slide out when cornering.

Front wheel drive,, usually because of more weight on the wheels..So more traction

front wheel drive. rear wheel drive pushes the car and the front tires have no traction so.... all wheel drive is better
