can you help me find our new san diego?

I was born in and grew up in San Diego, CA. It was great but now it is a nightmare because of the population explosion and extremely inflated housing prices. It was our perfect city but I'm not willing to live in the new horrible crowds and I don't want to rent forever. Can anyone tell me of a city just like San Diego used to be maybe 20 or 30 years ago or the same as San Diego without the new crowds and astronomical housing prices?

I would check out Nags Head N.C - It does get its summer vacationers, but still low key off season and relatively
still inexpensive
