Well, this is a very broad, open question, isn't it? I'm not sure that one being capitalized does anything to change the meaning here in this context. This isn't like the difference between a "big D" Democrat being a member of the US' Democratic political party and a "small D" democrat simply being in favor of a democratic system of government. Let me answer in a different way.

A short answer would be yes.

A longer answer would vary depending on which "ism" we are talking about. Here is my opinion, take it for what it is worth.

Liberalism as it is currently known in the US is different than Liberalism as it was seen, say in Latin America in the early 1900s. That kind of Liberalism was more "progress and change for the sake of itself". Modern Domestic Liberalism is fairly straightforward, it varies only in the degrees. For example, all liberals would favor a very strong separation of church and state but where as some extreme liberals actually hate organized religion, you have some more moderate liberals who are very devout believers.

Conservatism as it is known in the US today seems in a state of emergency. When it comes to the major issues of the day, there seem to be two opposing stances for conservatives. Both are thought-out, passionately held and diametrically opposed to each other. Some conservatives like George Will and the Chamber of Commerce folks are pro-immigration, while the Tom Tancrado conservatives seem almost xenophobic. Some conservatives like The Weekly Standard folks are still pro-Iraq War, while conservatives like Pat Buchanan have been against it since day one. Some conservatives like James Dobson seemingly base all policy decisions solely on their personal interpretations of holy scripture, while Goldwater-style conservatives vote Democratic in fear of them. Self-identified conservative George W. Bush has had an administration that has watched government grow faster that of LBJ's, faster than any since FDR's, while fiscal conservatives tear their hair out.

Communism? I suppose one could separate Communism into the pure form that Marx envisioned in the 1800's and the Marxist-Leninist Communism that every country that ever called itself Communist actually adapted. The big difference is that Marx's Communism firmly believe that a society could only become wholly socialistic after it became wholly capitalistic. Capitalism was necessary in order to create the underpinnings of a successful socialistic society. Now think of all the countries that ever called themselves Communist. All were not capitalistic, none were, at least according to Marx. They were still feudalistic, they had not become capitalistic yet. The countries in question all decided to skip a step, something that would have horrified Marx. When he wrote his works, he never even thought of backwards Tsarist Russia, he thought of countries like England or the socially progressive Germany of Otto Von Bismarck.

Catholism? Assuming that you are talking about Roman Catholism, I'd say there is only one, Orthodox Catholism as defined by the Pope. One can tilt a bit to the left or the right and still be orthodox but go too far and you become something else entirely.

Depends. Some just don't bother to capitalize and some don't do it as a statement. Occasionally, I will write Christian with a lower case "c" because I don't think that whoever the term refers to is really a Christian in the true sense.

A capital letter?

A better question would be: is there a difference between an idiot, and a moron? But I wouldn't want you to think too hard, that would break a long standing pattern for you. Don't fix what's broken if it's useless anyway.
