Refer to you sewing machine manual, you want to change the bobbin. If you do not have the manual, look up instructions on the internet for your make and model.

Sewing machines use a bobbin, a second thread from the bottom. You should use the same color in each. You need to take the bobbin reel out and rewind it with new thread according to the directions with your machine. They are all different. You could take a portable machine into Joannes Fabrics and ask.
There is a spindle for the regular thread on the right side. There is a spindle for the bobbin reel near the wheel. Usually you loosen the wheel on the right side so the needle does not go up and down while you are winding the bobbin.

Take the bobbin out of the case in the bottom of the machine.

Unthread the top of the machine, and put the end of the thread through the hole in the top of the bobbin.

At the right hand side of the machine should be a post that has a open triangle off the side of it, and a plain post about a 1/2 an inch from it. With your thread at the top of the bobbin place it on the post with the triangle until in clicks into place.

Push the post with the bobbin on it towards the other post (it should click into place).

Holding your thread straight up from your bobbin, gently press on your foot pedal. Your thread should start winding around your bobbin. If it is not winding, check to make sure the post is clicked into place. Press the foot pedal until the bobbin is full.

you put the thread in the bobbin that is under themetal plate under the needle. When that is put in, slowly put the needle down and that wil bring the thread up. Also, make sure that the thread on top is threaded into the needle.
