Your sound card probably died, or maybe your computer ****** up somehow..

were you in the process of installing any major programs, like a movie/music/game type program?

Sometimes installing a new media program can make your computer make sound settings go poof..

But I have a feeling it's your sound card.

Is it possible that someone coul have deleted
the sound and audio from the control panel? I did that once accidentally and had to reinstall the cd that contained it.
