usually they have you replace the book by paying the retail for it or by finding your own copy and 'donating' it.

It depends what library. At my uni it costs the price of the book + he fine of how late it is + a £20 handling fine!! Although never actually lost a book so this might be a scare tactic!

Just say you have been in hospital and they will waive the cost of the replacement book!! (some patient took the book), otherwise £5.99!!

If it's not actually overdue, they will charge you the cost of the book. If it's overdue aswell, then you'll be charged a weekly rate, ours is upto a maximum of £6, so once you've reached that, you can never get charged anymore! However, if you keep them out too long, they do get the bailiffs round to recover the "goods"!
