Bad fuel, check the lambda sensor for the fault and replace.

There are a couple of things you need to check here. You need to check the condition of the idle control valve. If it gets dirty its operation will become erratic and symptoms are surging revs, cutting out, or erratic revs. Or of course, a combination of all three, and the problems will only be apparent at idle.

If the problems occur only once the vehicle has warmed up then you may wish to check the condition of the O2 sensor.

There could be loose or split vacuum lines, or you could have a problem with the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor.

Just a couple or three scenarios to keep you busy!!

you have coil over plug set up. which means you have 4 coil packs over you 4 spark plugs. if you have an older version of the 1.8 you will most likly be you coil packs, does it feel like you lacking power or the car stumbles when you try to accelerate from a stop. the older coil packs die from the heat of the motor they sit rite over the top.you will most likly need to change you coil packs and or spark plugs depending on you milage/how worn they are. You might have a recall open for you coil packs if they are the older versions your local vw dealer will know for sure.Good luck
