I have patellofemoral syndrome in my knees, and I've been working out lately, but they keep swelling up really badly and they're so painful. What's the best way I can help tone down the pain and still exercise as often as I like?

The age is very important info. to provide for a health problem. How old r u?
OK I asked about that before i'm 21 years old and many people said that most of girls get a knees problem between the ages15 and 25 because the hip is in the width time.

One thing to consider in patellofemoral syndrome is the forces acting on the knee from above and below. For example, if you have poor muscular control of the hip, the influence on how your kneecap tracks is huge.

I would recommend you have a few sessions with a physical therapist, to make sure your alignment is as good as it can be. Go to APTA.org, click on "find a PT", and search your home area. I'd recommend a specialist in orthopedic or sports PT (OCS or SCS after their name).

NSAID's, ie ibuprofen or naproxen, and reduce the activity that causes the inflammatory response. If your work out includes running, try using an elliptical machine or bike instead. Buy new shoes. Your syndrome, also known as RPPS(retro-patellar pain syndrome) has limited treatment options. Rest, NSAID's, and a consult with a physical therapist are your best options. Good luck.

Swimming, obviously, because it doesn't really used the knees at all.

And stationary cycling might be less stressful on the knees provided the seat high enough. I don't know what your condition entails, but I would bet it's difficult to bend your knees; a high seat would keep the legs straighter at the expense of speed (which probably isn't your goal, anyway).

get knee pads, that way when you are on them doing what you do best it wont cause the pain.
