If you went in expecting a Will Ferrell comedy, I can understand why you hated it.

I thought it was a very funny, yet quirky comedy which had great acting and a great story. In other words I loved it.

It depends what you were expecting. If you were expecting a funny, light movie, then yes, it was HORRID!!!! Completely heavy weight compared to what you expected. But, lets look at it in another point of view.
The story was fabulous, I think. A story about a man who is living out a story TOLD by someone else. If the commercials hadn't given it away, I would've been delightfully surprised. And, though the comedy was slightly cheap, it was fairly amusing how Tim Ferrell reacted.
It was also humorous that he was a tax collector, and I loved the part with the anarchist. (lol). I also liked the part with him tallying weather he was in a comedy or tragedy and, "She kills people." That line was GREAT!! Now that you look back to it, it wasn't THAT HORRIBLE, but it was NOTHING compared to Talladega Nights.
Looking at the ending, it was quite cute and suspenseful. I liked the fact that all the literary characters were a bit crazy in the head (I, being an author) and loved the girl power displayed. And the visions the English girl had were actually how an author thinks. It was quite good, I think.
Looking for a comedy? Stranger Than Fiction might not be for you, although it displays quite a bit of one liners. Go see Anchor Man. Looking for a good story? STF has a pretty good story line. Looking for an epic film? Go see Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. STF doesn't fit in a genre, so it's not a very good movie, but all considered, I thought it was good.

If you were expecting Will Ferrell as his usual corky self, then you would be disappointed. Stranger than Fiction wasn't the best movie of 2006 but it held its own. Will Ferrell gave a strong and sometimes sympathetic performance. It showed his strength as an actor. As Jim Carrey wants to move into more dramatic roles, this was one that proved Ferrell has what it takes to pull off the dramatic. The ending was the best part of the movie and well worth my time. This is a classic story telling. I look forward to seeing more of Will Ferrell in dramatic roles.

I'm not a fan of the usual Will Ferrell vehicles. Fart jokes are OK for a little while, but not enough to sustain an entire movie. If you expected the usual Will Ferrell fare, I can see why you hated this one. But it was creative and interesting and quirky. Maggie Gyllenhal was charming; Dustin Hoffman was a kick, and it was great to see Emma Thompson again.
This is Ferrell's move out of the goofy usual Will Ferrell stuff - it's the same move Jim Carrey made, as well as Adam Sandler, Robin Williams and every other comedian who wants to broaden their career, and, well, stop doing movies built around fart jokes.

I was expecting more comedy since it was Will Ferrell, but I liked it anyway. More of the comedians are doing serious roles now. Robin Williams did One Hour Photo and Jim Carrey did The Number 23.
