What exactly is it? I know it's a movie, and I know Hugh Hefner has that big party every year, but what exactly is it about?
Would it be a good theme for a prom?

No this movie will not be a good theme for a prom unless your school has nothing but Skin Head as students. You need to see the movie. It's about Nazi, smuggling, war, etc.

I'm confused. What does the movie Casablanca have to do with a party hosted by Hugh Hefner?
The movie takes place in 1941/42 in Casablanca. The Nazis have taken over most of Europe. An escaped "Resistance Leader" and his wife show up in Casablanca hoping to get exit visas for a trip to America.
Humphrey Bogart plays Rick, a nigh club owner who had romantic ties with the wife of the Resistance Leader.
Casablanca is very tropical (it's in Africa) and is in Morocco. At the time is was part of the French empire.
Your prom could do "tropical". You should see the movie. You will get a lot of neat ideas. The ladies and gents in the movie at Rick's nightclub were impeccably dressed- very classy.
There is a lot you can do with this theme! :)

"Casablanca" takes places mostly in an American bar in the city of Casablanca, Morocco during World War 2. I don't think it would translate to a prom theme because I believe that it is not possible to reproduce Rick's Amercain Bar in such a large room as a gym, ballroom, etc. The other thing is that the people attending would have to dress in period clothes, which is not a good mix with a formal prom.

Possibly not a great prom theme as it involves drinking, gambling,the black market, wartime deprivation, Nazis and collaborationist French colonialists.
It is rather romantic in a classic Hollywood way and the clothes are very prom friendly, but that's about it.
