This could take a while but.........

The object of football is to score more soints than the opposing team. (obviously)

The game begins with the coin toss. Winner chooses "Kick" or "Receive"
Loser chooses which endzone they want to defend.

The kicking team kicks the ball. The receiving team catches the ball and tries to advance as far up the field as they can.

Offense:
11 people on the field at a time.
1 Quarterback, 5 Linemen, and 5 skilled positions
Those 5 skilled players and can consist of any combitation of Runningbacks, or Receivers.

The offensive team (The team with the ball) has four attempts to advance the ball 10 yards. Each attemp is called a "down." (First Down = the first attempt). If they fail after 4 downs, they give the ball to the other team. This is called a "Turnoveron Downs." Typically, if they fail after 3 downs, they will elect to Punt on fourth down. A punt is a ball kicked as far away from your own endzone as possible. The other team has a chance to catch the ball and run it back as far as they can.

If the offense does advance the ball ten or more yards, they get a fresh set of downs.(Example: If the offense gains 0 yards on first down and gains 14 yards on second down, then their next attempt is considered "First down").

They can gain those yards by either running or passing the ball. A run play is when a player receives the ball in the offensive back fields (Behind the linemen) and runs forward. Also known as a Rushing attempt. A pass is when the Quarterback tries to throw the ball to one of the 5 skilled players down the field. This is a Passing attempt. The job of the offense is to advance the ball down the field and into the endzone. An endzone is the last 10 yards at each end of the field. If the offense can get the ball into the endzone, they are awarded 6 points. They then have the option of trying to gain 1 extra point or two. An extra point or "PAT" (Point after Touchdown), the kicker will come out and try to kick the ball through the uprights from the 2 yard line. For a two point conversion, the offese stays on the field and tries once again to get the ball into the endzone. If the offense cannot score a touchdown, but is pretty close to the endzone, they may tray a "field goal" on fourth down. Just like a PAT, the kicker will try to kick the ball through the uprights, only from farther away. This is worth 3 points.

Defense: The job of the defense is too stop the offense! Do not allow them into the endzone. Pretty simple right? The have to stop the offense from running the ball and not allow completed passes. If they cause the offense to drop the ball, this is called a fumble and they have a chance to recover the ball and put their offese on the field. A defense will consist of 11 players. Typically: 4 Defensive linemen, 3 Linebackers and 4 Defensefive back. The line men try to stop the run, the defensive backs try to stop the pass and the linebackers do both.

Hope this helps. Email me if you need to know more

OK, Wel there are two teams.

Each team takes turns trying to move the ball towards the other team's goal- called an end zone. If a team gets the ball into their opponent's endzone either by throwing the ball, or running the ball into the endzone, this is called a touchdown and is worth six(6) points. After the scoring of a touchdown, the team that scored is given the opportunity to score either 1 point by having their kicker kick the ball through the uprights of the goal post- the large "y" shaped pole located at the back of either endzone- or 2 points by getting the ball into the opposing team's endzone a second time (either by running or throwing)

A team may elect to kick the ball through the goal post from any part of the field, and if this kick is successful it is known as a field goal and is worth 3 points.

The team that has the ball has four chances- called downs- to move the ball a distance of 10 yards (30 ft) If the team is successful in moving the ball 10 yards or more, then that team gets four more downs to continue to move the ball. That team keeps possession of the ball until Either A) That team scores
B) The team fails to move the ball 10 yards within the 4 downs (this is known as turning the ball over on downs) C) A player on that team drops the ball (fumble) and a player on the opposing team recovers th ball D) A player on the opposing team intercepts the ball(catches a pass intended for another player on the other team)

If a team's current field position is such that they feel they will not be able to move the ball enough to gain a 1st down, then that team may elect to punt (kick the ball away) to the other team- moving the opposing team farther away from their goal.

I know it seems like a lot to take in, but I've found that explaining football is a lot easier when a game is actually in progress.

Must have 11 players on field for each team, 7 on line of scrimmage from offense. 5 of which must be numbered 50-79. False start is 5 yrd penalty. holding is 10 yrd penalty. any unsportsmanlike is 15 yrd penalty.

When I first started watching football I got "Football for Dummies" written in part by Howie Long. It was very helpful & you can probably get it cheap on Ebay.

That question is way to general. College football, pro football, soccer, etc???

Your best bet is to start with wikipedia and go from there...

There are so many rules to list it would be a very long answer.

11 players on the field for each team on offense and defense, 22 total per play. At the start of the game, the team that wins the coin flip chooses whether to receive the ball at the start of the game, or kick to the other team at the start, and get it after halftime. Kickoffs occur at the start of the game, after halftime, and after either team scores.
Scoring: There are 3 types of scoring in football. The touchdown is when a team gets the ball into the end zone they are aiming for, through a catch or run. common, worth 6 points. after TD, the scoring team can either kick the ball through the uprights for an additional 1 point(very common), or try to get the ball in the end zone again from the two yard line for 2 points (very rare, used mainly when trying to catch up to other team, and in desperate need of points)
The field goal is when a team has their kicker kick the ball through the uprights(Y shaped metal bars. common, worth 3 pints
The safety is when team b's defense tackles the player on team A with the ball in Team As own endzone. rare, and worth 2 points
Offense: a team has 4 tries to get 10 yardseach try is called a down. if, after 4 tries, team A fails to convert for 10 yards, team B gets the ball right where team A last had it. If, after 3 tries, Team A doesn't want to take chance on 4th down, (when if they miss, they will lose the ball), they can punt the ball, where the punter catches the ball from throguh the legs of a player at the line of scrimmage (yard-line where last play ended) tosses it up in the air about a foot, and kicks it to the other end of the field. when team A is punting, team b puts a player at the other end of the field, and that player will catch the punt, and either attempt to return it the other way, or call a fair catch, where the other team can't tackle him, and team B gets the ball right where their player caught it.
Offensive positions: Quarterback-throws the ball to receiver
Wide receiver-catches quarterback's throws
Running Back - QB hands off or tosses ball to him, and he runs as far as he can
Fullback - blocks other players from tackling RB
Tight End - like a wide receiver, only slower and tougher, used to get short yardage more than for long gains.
Offensive Lineman - prevent defense from tackling QB

Defense: Team A is now on defense. Team B can throw or Run. If team b decides to throw, team A can intercept the ball, or, in other words catch the other team's QB's throw, and try to return it for a TD. They can also sack the QB, or, in other words, tackle him behind the line of scrimmage. another defensive play is when the offensive player in possession of the ball fumbles, or loses possession of the ball, at which point the ball is free game, and whoever picks it up recovers it, and gives possession to their offense if the defense recovers, or retains possesion if the offense recovers.
Defensive players: Corner backs-cover wide receivers to try to prevent them from catching the ball
Safeties-go deep downfield, assist CB's in preventing pass completions
Linebackers - usually stay near line of scrimmage, try to sack QB or prevent long running plays.
Defensive Lineman. Right at line of scrimmage, try to sack QB.

Special Teams - Kicking - covers kickoffs, field goals, and extra pints(after TD's.)
Punting - already explained.

Penalties are also applied to either team based on many reasons, some of which are holding(holding of opponent), false start(going past line of scrimmage before ball is snapped), and pass interference(prevention of another player of having a chance to catch the ball ex: tackling a player before the ball gets there, which takes out any chance of him catching it). Penalties applied by referees.

Plays can also be challenged by either head coach. ex: palyer makes a sideline catch, but ruled out of bound by referees on the grounds that one foot was out of bounds. head coach can challenge ruling. if overturned, team gets ball at that spot. if ruling stands, team theat challenged originally loses 1 timeout.

This pretty much covers everything. I know its lengthy, but football is a tough sport to understand. hope this helps!

there are two teams, you score if you can lead the ball in to your adversary goal. Players can't touch the ball with their hands, only with their feet, legs, chest and head.
