I am rebuilding a 55 chevy pickup, and currently have a 10-bolt rearend. However in every car mag I read, people talk about putting in 12-Bolt and Ford 9 inch differentials....

If it's just going to be a weekend cruiser (no racing) does it really matter?

If you aren't going to hotrod it too much a 10 bolt should do fine. The reason people upgrade them is because a 12 bolt (chevy) and a 9 inch (ford) are stronger rear ends. Alot of people are worried about breaking them. Another reason people want to change to a 9 inch is because they are a quick change rearend. But if you already have a 10 bolt, put it in, if it breaks, oh well. Then you can think about putting a bigger rearend in it.

Ford 10 Bolt Rear End

The ten bolt should work great. 9 inch fords are very strong due to a pinion support that the other differentials dont have. They also have a larger variety of gear ratio's. The 12 bolt is also a brutally strong diff but can be a tad bit more expensive than the 9 inch. If you break your ten bolt more than 2 times, then look into replacing it.

GM 10 bolt rear end is good up to about 350HP
GM 12 bolt usually can handle 450-500HP
Ford 9" rear is the rear end to have if you plan on serious HP.
The bad thing about the 9" rear is weight.
The biggest and toughest of the rear ends out there is the Dan 60.
Much to heavy for a weekend racer though.
It pretty much depends on whether or not you will use slicks.

I know that the 9 inch is superb for drag racing!

I'm building a 1987 Cutlass Supreme and I will put either a Grand National (3:73) or that Ford 9 inch

Education is good, because it teaches you how to learn, how to discipline your mind. Knowledge for a Christian is knowing the word, knowing your God, His nature, His will, His outlook on things. Wisdom is looking at things from God's perspective and putting them into action. Knowledge is great, but too much of it can puff you up if you don't counteract it with fruit of the Spirit. Ever know a person who's very knowledgeable, but has no temperance and no love? Their knowledge is almost useless in the long run. But wisdom? You find that and your soul shall live, because when you find wisdom, you find the way God Himself looks at a situation. Proverbs 3: By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.

if you will be tappin' it cool the 10 bolt will be fine , it can be a benefit to not run the "trickest" stuff since your replacement parts will be cheaper.
