Somehow they went from talking about a clay man that did whatever you told him to do, to like the simpson family in the past???

It wasn't a new episode. It was the most recent Halloween episode, Treehouse of Horror XVII. Like all Simpsons Halloween episodes, it has three separate, independent stories which aren't supposed to have any continuity at all with the rest of the series. That's why the TOH episodes do stuff like kill characters, clone Homer, turn Homer into a blob, turn Lisa into a goat, etc.
The three stories in TOH 17 were Homer becoming a blob, the clay golem, and the War of the Worlds send-up where everything was sepia-toned to look like the past.

The "clay man that did whatever you told him to do" was based on a character from Jewish folklore called the Golem.
