I have done a lot of writing over the past several years and have been told by several people who would have the knowledge and the experience that I should submit pieces to various magazines. I am in a position to try doing so now, but have no idea what to do or how to go about it. Any suggestions??

You might be better off submitting them to contests, but either way, try investing in the latest edition of The Writer's Handbook (usually found in the reference section). Or try a writer's magazine. Just be careful of scams. Contests are really the better bet, though, as they give you more of a resume to get you an agent. You would need an agent if you wanted to go professional as most magazines don't accept unsolicited m.s.
