I also recommend The Inheritance books, Harry Potter, The Series of Unfortunate Events, and The Book Thief.

I know that is a lot, but all of them are good. Hopefully this will keep you going for a while.

How young? For the 10-16 year olds I would recommend:

The JK Rowling Harry Potter series is good

The Inheritance Trilogy (Eragon, Eldest & The 3rd one isn't out yet) by Christopher Paolini

A Series Of Unfortunate Events by Limony Snicket

These are PG rated

For the 16-20's I would suggest:

A Song Of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin

Wicked and Son of a Witch are good too...

These are PG-13 rated

If you like humor you could try the Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison. The first book is "Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging" and the book is as funny as the title.

If you don't mind reading paranormal/supernatural stories I would suggest "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer, The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot (first book is called "Shadowland") or my story "The Shadow Within" by Jenine Wilson.

If you want something down to earth you could try "Shug" by Jenny Hahn which is a sweet story about a girl's crush on her best friend.

If you want something serious with a bit of social consciousness I would suggest "Saint Iggy" by K.L. Going.

If you wanted to see reviews or descriptions for any of these books I'm providing the amazon links below.

if the young adult is a girl,i think she would love Sophie's world by Justin Gardner.it is an itroduction to philosophy in avery original way, very educating and catching at the same time.
it tells a story about a 13year old girl, and was written for young people in the same age range.well, i read at 22 and really really liked it.

One of my favorites would have to be Memoirs of a Geisha by Golden. I loved it!
I also loved the Princess Bride by Goldman.
Wicked and Son of a Witch by Maguire are fantastic books too, though, and I highly recommend them.
Enjoy!

i definitely recommend the Bartimaeus (I think that is how you spell it) series. Such great books. There are three. Its a new series, but the plot is wonderfully unique, with great characters and great action, and wonderful prose. Overall, it rates next to Harry Potter to me (which is saying a lot).
