Get some of those sticky traps.

Personally, I don't use the wooden traps because they are inhumane and quite messy. You could go for the "glue traps", but that would also be a bit inhumane (but to each their own).

The best traps are the living ones; basically, they are a little cage with a one-way door that snaps shut the moment they try to take the bait. This leaves the mouse alive and no mess to really clean up (besides any droppings they leave in the cage). As an added bonus, you can take the caught mouse to the woods (or as far from your house as you can so that they don't come back) and set it free without having to touch it (most have a latch which you can use to safely open the door.) I've provided a link for a good source for live traps in the sources section.

Otherwise, there are a variety of glue traps and poisons you can use; check your hardware store and see what's best.

While you may have clever mice, or perhaps old traps, I've never seen this as a consistent problem. If the traps are new and not rusty I'd wonder if you don't have rats?

I mean if you've seen them, or their droppings are rice grain sized, then its mice. You didn't mention what you used as bait. If they are mice I use peanut butter, and make sure you work it into the holder, not too much though.

If you think they are pulling themselves out due to low spring tension... Turn the trap over and nail some small finishing nails through it so they stick through the wood, just inside the wire frame. Disgusting, I know, but very effective.

I had this same issue last spring. Peanut butter won't even work. They are slick little mice. You have two choices; poison, not a good choice if you have small children or pets. Or there is the sticky trap. You can get it at Wal-Mart, Kmart, etc. But there is a set back there too. The mouse will still be alive and you will have to figure out a way to get the live mouse and trap out of your house. I used a hanger, stuck it in the trap and then ran to the out side trash. Good luck. Oh there is always prof. help too pricey but they will take care of other household pests as well.

What I found works is to take a piece of cheese and mush it up into a little ball and put it under the lever so that they have to twist and turn to get to the bottom of it. You can also do it with bread. They always end up making a mistake while they are trying to maneuver to get the bait and set the trap off. Also, some are smarter. For those you can go to the local feed & seed store and get these green pellets. They come in individual bags that you do not open. The mice will eat into it. They will try to go to a source of water so make sure toilets are closed or they might scare you. :) They will find somewhere to die but normally they make it outside before that happens. If not, they will find a place, say between the walls, and die. With those pellets they will not stink as they decompose. I will try to get the name of it for you it the trap idea does not work.

Ok, mice are very intelligent creatures. They really are and it can be very difficult to catch one. The humane traps DO NOT WORK. On occasion the snap traps do, though they've never worked for me.

The plug in device helps if you live in an apartment.

But the thing that works complete wonders though it's so unGodly evil.... The sticky pads..... They work but they are very-very depressing. Poor, poor mice.

Mice are very smart. They will not eat from a trap that has caught another of their little friends. They learn from their mistakes in other words. Poison is the best bet but then you have the problem of them smelling the house up when they expire. Best way is to catch them in their tracks, sticky pad will catch them but then you have a live mouse you have to kill and I know mice are bad but killing one or letting it starve makes me sad :-(

I use those sticky traps. It is disgusting to find them stuck there alive, but not as disgusting as having them run around the kitchen! They are cheap and they work. Put them against the wall where the mice travel. They also catch spiders, which makes them even more useful!

Get a cat. :D
Seriously though, put all of your cereal, flour, and other food in plastic containers with lids, take all of the food you throw away our of the house immediately, make sure there are no crumbs on your stove.
Those sticky traps are scary. The mice don't die til they starve, and sometiems they chew off their own legs trying to get free, and wind up stuck anyway. I would not want to deal with that, look at that, or clean it up.
