Based on what he did on the field, he should be in. If not, they should take all of his memorabillia out. He bet on baseball, so what. His teams never threw a game, and he never bet against them. Should Ty Cobb not be in the Hall for being a racist? If character was so much of an issue, there would be reasons for not allowing anyone into the Hall.

Based on Major League Baseball's history of denying membership in the Hall of Fame to players of questionable moral fiber, I would say "no". I'm referring in particular to those players involved in the "Black Sox Scandal" who intentionally lost the World Series. I believe that occurred in 1919.
I have dislike Pete Rose since 1969 when he beat up the Mets' Bud Harrelson (but, then again, I AM a Mets' fan!).
There is no question that his statistics warrant his election to the Hall of Fame. However, apparently, the writers who vote for membership in the Hall of Fame have other criteria as well.

All you people who think or say the king of hits shouldn't be in the Baseball Hall of Fame make me sick to my stomach. I understand that to be inducted into the hall there has to be a balance of moral character in the player and not just super personal stats. Because Pete Rose betted on baseball he doesn't deserve to be inducted? Well, why is Babe Ruth inducted? He was not giving a good example on morality. He was a womanizer, a drunk and God knows what else. Ty Cobb, was believed to have been a murderer and yet he's in the Hall. I think this morality rule thing should just be taken out of the way and the personal baseball accomplishments should be just considered. Pete Rose should be in Cooperstown. If you believe he shouldn't be in, you're a hypocrite. We all break rules. God forbids for us to gamble with our salvation and yet we don't care, so why should we care more about trivialities that really don't make sense. If God wouldn't mind that Rose be inducted, why should we. Pete Rose belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

No.
Pete Rose bet on baseball. Because he bet on baseball he was suspended from baseball. People suspended from baseball are not eligible for the HOF.
I've been reading some of the responses, and people need to understand something. This has to do with the BlackSox scandle of 1919. but there is a rule on major league clubhouse walls that says, "You shall not associate with gamblers in any way."
Say what you want about steroid use, but the truth is using substances like that was NOT illegal in baseball. And the cop out that "well other people have done worse" really is a cop out.
Rose broke the cardinal rule of baseball. And not only did he break it, but he flaunted his disrespect for baseball in the process. This was not a case of him making a mistake, this was a case of a sick man with a problem.

Yes, I do. There are Hall of Famers who have done screwed up things and are still able to make the Hall of Fame. Pete Rose should be in as well. He is the all time leader in hits. How can you not have the all time leader in hits, in the Hall of Fame?

I just answered another Pete Rose question...he must be in the news or something...
I was in Vegas a couple of years ago, and I saw him at the mall in Caesar's, sitting in front of some kinda store signing souvenirs for money. I looked down the hall and saw the "lollipop guild" midget from the Wizard of Oz doing the same thing.
I paid money to have a picture with that cool little midget. There'd be no way I'd ever shell money to get a picture with some has-been drunk. He actually looked drunk that day, too.

No. Certainly not during his lifetime. Given that Shoeless Joe Jackson has not been inducted since the 1919 gambling Black Sox fiasco, Pete Rose is unlikely to be included even after his death.

I still dont understand why he is not in the Hall of Fame. He was betting on baseball, after he played. I could care less if he sold drugs to little kids, he was one of the best players of his time, and deserves to be in the Hall.

Yes and no. Yes because he was a great player, no because he broke a rule that can not be broken. Doing what he did is unacceptable, if you consider what happened with the Black Sox scandal in 1916, you have to keep him out of the Hall. Just the way it is. Maybe when he is really old or dead, then get him in there.

Absolutely. Pete defined the game of baseball in a new light. Excitement. The head first slides are still a treat to watch. Nobody has ever played this game with a higher intensity. He deserves it, he earned it.
