I'm asking this on behalf of my sister, she can go as long as 3 months without a period, shes 25 and belives this is due to the fact that she is obese. has anyone heard of this?

It's not necessarily because she is overweight as I have friends that are obese and they have normal periods.
It can in some cases though just as being under weight can also cause lack of periods.
It's most likey to be caused by a hormonal problem like pcos or an under active thyroid both of which can cause a person to be obese and thus affect the menstrual cycle.
I would suggest she goes to her gp and ask for blood tests to check if she suffers from either of these problems
this is also more like if she has other symptons too -
hair in male pattern ie on face, chest
acne
male pattern hair loss
painfull periods
heavy periods or really light periods
spotting in between periods
periods lasting for longer than expected
irregular periods
extreme tiredness.

Obesity And Irregular Periods

Yep. It sure does. Being obese will definitely cause irregular periods and can also cause one to have trouble getting pregnant and if you do get pregnant, you'll have a rough pregnancy. My mother was nearly 400 pounds and had a very hard time with my brother. She had to have an emergency c-section. There were soooooo many docs in the room during delivery. Well, hope this is somewhat helpful.

Both being grossly over and underweight affects hormones and can lead to missed periods.

Once must always be wary however of quick replies. Is she on contraception? The mini pill will also stop periods. Last but not least, when I was a student, a wise old gynaecologist taught me ' when a woman, of childbearing age, misses a period she is pregnant until proven otherwise.'

At three months without a confident reason for missing periods she should see her GP for a check up anyway.

Women who suffer from multiple miscarriages may also be diagnosed as infertile. Infertility may be classified into two groups, primary and secondary infertility.

Some thyroid disorders can be cured, but many require lifetime treatment. Learn here https://tr.im/F3gaf
For example, sometimes early stage thyroid cancer can be cured by surgery to remove the thyroid gland, but you will need to take thyroid hormone medication afterwards for the rest of your life. Goiters can also be surgically removed and do not always recur after surgery. In most cases, thyroid disorders need treatment over a lifetime. However, with treatment most people with thyroid disorders can live normal, healthy lives.
