Okay, I have tried all of these other answers before living in Florida and NONE of the home remedies worked!
However, I finally gave up and called an exterminator and that worked! It only cost me $14 and they came out and found the colony, sprayed them and no more ants. I had those little black kitchen ants or "sugar ants" because they get into ANYTHING in the kitchen (flour, sugar, oil, pasta- anything). Come to find out they were living in a post OUTSIDE that supported the roof of our porch and were trailing up to the roof, over and down into my kitchen cabinets. I know how you feel, it was so frustrating to try everything only to watch them march across the ceiling and then the counters and then the walls. Nothing I did helped. Not traps, concoctions, sprays, or cleaners. And because they found the tiniest bit of crumbs not even locking up all food in air tight containers worked. They just moved to my trash! Call an bug man he'll nip their little butts and usually guarantee the work.

Get some Grants Ant Bait and put some along the trail of the ants. They carry the bait back to the colony which eventually kills them. I just moved into a house that had them. Someone told me about Grant's and it worked. I've had no ants since. There are other name brands out there, but Grants seems to be the one to beat.

A natural method is to go to a garden center and buy a bag of Diatomaceous Earth (microfine ground up plankton shells). Pour it in an unbroken line either around the anthill, or around your house if that's where you don't want the ants to go. They will ingest it, and it literally kills them from the microfine particles being sharp enough to shred their digestive tracts. The deaths of a few tend to release pheremones that warn the other ants to stay away. Also works well and safely to surround a veggie or herb garden.

I am a big fan of the raid ant killers. However, if you are looking for a more natural repelent, try Bay Leaves, ants hate them.

Use some table salt pour it where the ants are making an entry to your home.

Salt emits a gas that will repel the ants, I would put it inside and outside the place where they are making their way into your home.

Baby powder! Yes it's really that simple! Ants breath through their legs. They can't breath when they walk throught the baby powder. Just sprinkle it on them, their trails, and where they are coming and going, and no more ants! I was so surprised and it doesn't harm your pets or children.
