This is the US Dept of Labor's website for everything you ever wanted to know about Medical Transcriptionists and then some.

Good luck with both the job and the child.

I started out my working career as a word processor at a large legal firm in Chicago (lots of legal transcription work). I became a medical transcriptionist after getting an A.A. certificate (56 hours - about 18 months of school) at my local city (junior/community) college. I then worked as a medical transcriptionist at a private hospital in Chicago for about 1 year.

Later I started my own medical transcription business (tried for about 1 1/2 years, with limited success).. Then I worked from home for a medical transcription company based in New Jersey.

If you have your medical transcription certificate, are a member of the medical transcription association, have your own computer with Internet access, then you can make good (not great) money working from home for one of the large medical transcription companies.

Medical transcription work is not difficult but very detailed. You really have to have a good ear and know your medical terminology.

My mother is a medical transcriptionist and learned at home with At Home Professions and they just send tapes and books. I'm not quite sure how long it takes, but it can't be too long because she switched jobs fast. You might want to check google to see if they have a website. Be warned though, you might be swamped sometimes and its usually on certain days....good luck!

what area of the country are you in? Do you have any transcription experience? I got my training at a local career college - and have used it in many ways since. If you type in your home - you will need additional equipment - such as a transcription machine - possibly a printer, etc. Check out this link for further information on schools.
