The Phillies have a talent for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. They traded Abreu to the loathed Yankees for a handful of magic beans. Randy Wolf and Mike Lieberthal are Dodgers. Giambi is aging and without Balco's little helper may have trouble surviving the season intact. While I hope the Phillies are not so stupid as to let Howard go, it is not inconceivable that they would trade him to try to get value. Another handful of magic beans from Cashman could do it.

There is at least another 4 years before Howard can even file for free agency. In about another year, if not sooner, the Phillies should move to sign Howard to a 5+ year contract.

They only signed him for the one year. They will re-sign him for sure. As a second year player they were not going to give him more then that (the total actually tied Pujols for thighest ever for a player with the same amount of MLB exp).
Expect huge $$$ for him next year

Nacnud you know I'm a big home team fan. Every team has a player that excels to an extent where we want him on our team. He's been in the bigs for what two years? He had a great year last year but let's see what he does this year. Watch Alex he's gonna be big this year he's trying to make a statement.

Howard and the Phillies reached a one-year deal today for $900K, an incredible bargain for the Phillies. If they know what's good for them, the Phillies will pay him whatever he wants because this guy could be one of the all-time greats if he stays healthy and clean.

Yeah, he has the $900,000, but do not be surprised if he gets a long term deal in the $120M range over about 7 seasons. I would guess he will get this sometime before the All-Star break.

Yes the pinstripes will knock a few pounds off his fat azz. Anyone remember Cecil Fielder with the Yankees? He looked very svelte after putting on that uniform even stole a base if I recall correctly. It's just too bad that the Phillies signed Howard to a 1 year, $900,000 offer like the Cards did with Pujols and will probably give him a huge contract next year. But I'm sure the Yanks will come calling after that huge deal expires when Howard is older and fatter kind of like Cecil Fielder.

If the Yanks get Howard, I will officially stop watching baseball.

The phillies will probably sign him for a long term contract but the yanks got enough outfielders anyways with Damon, Abreu, and Matsui.
