I think it's partly because they feel like their honesty is being questioned, and sometimes with good reason.
I think that people who feel like they have a lot to hide shouldn't ever share anything rather than share bits and pieces that might encourage further questions.
Or, if they are lying, they shouldn't have started with it in the first place.
Liars often get defensive when questioned about things because they think it deflects the negative attention from themselves.
People who have done something wrong often get defensive because they are either ashamed or they feel guilty.
People who lash out at those who have things that they wish they have are simply envious. And envy can be a really nasty thing sometimes.
Just my two cents though.

well i know i get heated when I see questions that just erk me. Like ppl complaining b/c everytime they go out a baby is always crying and interrupting their good time, ppl asking stupid questions about abortions, even when i ask a question a person just assumes i haven't done this or that and they question me being a parent, some ppl like me, get so heated b/c there are alot of stupid ppl here that just say stupid things. I mean i love yahoo answers and i love most of the responses i get for my questions.. while other freaking ppl post the most stupidest things in the wrong section and ppl writing stupid comments to your question when you are worried and just need some advice. So i don't know.. i'm just a passionate person and when i see something I don't like or i think is stupid i will let everyone know.

because they think it will hide the fact that they A> are what they say they despise, or B> don't want to admit they want

because they a followers not leaders and are not true to themselves.they live with lots of regrets and probably got more skeletons in there closet then i do. know you no thats bad.
