My case is ATX tower. The only place to install a second hard drive was the space directly above my main hard drive. This leaves only about a centimeter of space between the two drives. It's tight, but at least they are not touching. Is this normal? Is it a threat to the health of either hard drive?

It's not ideal, but not a bad threat. It may get a little warm in there, but if you have decent fans in the case you should be fine.

It's fine. That's the same as any other hard drive pairing in any computer I've ever opened- about 2, including a Pentium.

This should not harm either drive. The only down-side could be related to heat. They can run hot, but it should not cause any major issues.
